Brew Guide: Beans to AreoPress - Choose Coffee

Brew Guide by Carlos: Beans to AreoPress

Olá, meu amigo — Carlos here.

If the AeroPress were a person, it would be that friend who’s always up for an adventure. Small, flexible, surprisingly strong, and somehow always in a good mood.

It’s the perfect brewer for people who want great coffee without the ceremony — students, travellers, busy Londoners, and anyone who appreciates a bit of Brazilian efficiency with their morning caffeine.

Let’s make a cup that’s smooth, bold, and ready in minutes.

Step 1: Pick Your Beans (AeroPress Loves Variety)

The AeroPress is wonderfully forgiving — it works with almost any roast. But if you want the best results, go for:

Light roasts for bright, fruity cups

Medium roasts for balance and sweetness

Dark roasts if you want something bold and punchy

Carlos tip: If you’re experimenting, start with medium. It’s the “good vibes” roast — friendly to everyone.

Step 2: Grind Size (Medium-Fine Is the Sweet Spot)

For AeroPress, you want a grind that’s:

            Finer than a filter

            Coarser than espresso

Think table salt, but slightly softer

Why

Because the AeroPress uses pressure, too fine and it’ll clog, too coarse and it’ll taste weak.

Step 3: Prep Your AeroPress (Quick and Easy)

1.            Place a paper filter in the cap

2.            Rinse it with hot water

3.            Warm the chamber if you’re feeling fancy

Carlos tip: Rinsing the filter removes papery taste and helps the seal. It’s a tiny step that makes a big difference.

Step 4: Measure Your Coffee (The Golden AeroPress Ratio)

A great starting point is:

15g of coffee

220ml of water

Or, if you’re not weighing:

            1 heaped AeroPress scoop

A mug’s worth of hot water

This gives you a smooth, balanced cup — not too strong, not too light.

Step 5: Choose Your Style (Normal or Inverted)

Normal Method

The classic. Clean, simple, reliable.

Inverted Method

More control, richer flavour, slightly rebellious — very Brazilian.

Carlos tip: If you’re new, start normal. If you’re feeling adventurous, go inverted. I switch depending on my mood and the weather (which, in London, means I switch a lot).

Step 6: Brew (The Fun Part)

Normal Method Steps

1.            Add coffee to the chamber

2.            Pour hot water (around 90–94°C) up to the top

3.            Stir for 10 seconds

4.            Insert the plunger and gently press

Inverted Method Steps

1.            Flip the AeroPress upside down

2.            Add coffee

3.            Add water and stir

4.            Steep for 1 minute

5.            Attach the cap with the filter

6.            Flip carefully (don’t panic)

7.            Press slowly

Pressing should take 20–30 seconds.

If it feels like arm day at the gym, your grind was too fine.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Cup (Or Turn It Into Anything)

AeroPress coffee is smooth, clean, and full of flavour.

Drink it as is, or turn it into:

            An Americano (add hot water)

            A latte (add steamed milk)

An iced coffee (pour over ice)

A cold brew (yes, the AeroPress can do that too)

Carlos tip: Give the final brew a swirl before sipping — it blends the layers and makes the flavour pop.

Carlos’ Final Word

The AeroPress is the superhero of coffee makers — small, powerful, and always ready to save your morning. It’s perfect for experimenting, travelling, or just making a great cup without any fuss.

Follow these steps, and you’ll get a brew that’s bright, bold, and full of personality… just like the Brazilian who taught you how to make it.
